Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 inch (2.54 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, a bend archy in the colors of the rainbow (Gules, Or and Azure) between in chief a prickly pear cactus and in base a palm tree on a mound Proper.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield is a Silver scroll inscribed "ON GUARD" in Blue letters.

Symbolism
The shield is white, the old Infantry color.  The bend archy in the form of a rainbow shows the service of the Regiment in World War I in the 42d Division.  The cactus represents the Mexican Border service and the palm tree the Philippine service.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 28 July 1931.

The crest is that for the regiments and separate battalions of the Iowa Army National Guard:  On a wreath Argent and Azure a hawk's head erased Proper.
